Elston Howard and NHR

Forty years ago, in May of 1984, NHR held its first invitational golf tournament. The tournament was named the Elston Howard Golf Classic to honor the memory of Elston Howard who died in 1980. Elston Howard was an American professional baseball player. He played in the Negro leagues and Major League Baseball. A 12 time All-Star, he for played the Kansas City Monarchs, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. In 1955, he became the first African American player on the Yankees roster.

So, why did NHR honor Elston Howard? Apart from his fame as a professional baseball player, Elston Howard was one of NHR’s founders and a former Board member!

He and his wife Arlene Howard were very active in the establishment and development of NHR from our beginning in 1974. They helped to organize several fundraisers including the Yankee Pinch Hitters and Blass…T! – a Bill Blass fashion show sponsored by the New York Yankees and John Revson. At the awards dinner following that first golf tournament, Arlene Howard was presented with a Founder’s Award for her outstanding service and dedication to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In accepting the award, Mrs. Howard stated “Elston would have been proud to see the work you have done. I know I’m proud for you.”
